The Third-Generation CTP Battery Pack Technology

On June 23, 2022, CATL officially released the third-generation CTP battery pack technology - Kirin battery. Through the improvement of the structure of the battery pack, the space utilization rate was increased from 56% to 72%, claiming that in the design of same size and chemical system, its system energy density can reach 255Wh/kg, which is 13% higher than that of Tesla. The cruising range of the whole vehicle can easily exceed 1000km. It adopts the world's first large-area cooling technology leak testing equipment. The Kirin battery supports 5min fast hot start and 10min fast charging to 80% SOC has achieved comprehensive improvements in battery life, fast charging, safety, lifespan, efficiency and low-temperature performance. It is expected to be mass-produced and launched in 2023. It will be installed in GEELY Automobile's high-end electric car MPV - Jikr 009 for the first time.

 

The structure of the Kirin battery helium leak detection system is as follows from top to bottom: upper cover, three-in-one elastic interlayer, battery, and tray. One of the key points of innovation is the highly integrated three-in-one elastic interlayer, which replaces structural beams (longitudinal and horizontal beams), heat insulation pads and water-cooled plates with elastic interlayers, and arranges them between each row of battery cells to provide four functions: structural support, cooling and heat dissipation , cell heat insulation and expansion buffer.

 

Kirin Battery places the water-cooled plate (elastic interlayer) that should be placed at the bottom of the cells vertically between the cells, increasing the heat exchange area leak test device by 4 times and greatly improving the heat dissipation performance, thus realizing safe and fast charging of the battery. According to CATL report, Kirin battery can achieve 4C fast charging technology, realize hot start in 5 minutes, and fast charge to 80% in 10 minutes.

 

In addition, the Kirin battery adopts an inverted cell design with the explosion-proof valve facing downward. When the thermal runaway of the cell occurs, high-temperature airflow will be sprayed to the bottom of the car to further protect the safety of drivers and passengers.

 

Kirin battery is an important way for CATL to further improve battery performance through structural innovation under the existing prismatic battery technology route. CATL adopts the world's first battery large-surface cooling technology, which cancels the original independent design of horizontal beams, water-cooled plates and heat insulation pads, and integrates them into a multi-functional elastic interlayer, realizing the three-in-one function of water cooling, heat insulation and buffering , thus achieving a greater improvement in system integration.
